A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Stamford area, with snow, wind and coastal flooding in the forecast for Thursday with possible accumulations of 3 to 7 inches possible.
The snow is expected to begin late Wednesday night.
Bitter to dangerous cold, with wind chills -15 to -25 are predicted with wind gusts from 15 to 40 mph to begin late Thursday and continue into late Friday. Bitter cold is expected to follow the storm over the weekend.
Thursday garbage and recycling pickups will continue as normal in Stamford. The Transfer Station will be open on Thursday, but the Recycling Center will be closed.
“Today, our city departments and crews are preparing for the storm,” said Martin. “Residents should also prepare for this event, avoid driving if possible and plan ahead to make certain the roads are clear for plows.”
Flooding is expected to be moderate. Residents that typically experience flooding during these types of events should expect similar flooding.
The Hurricane Barrier is being manned by the Army Corps of Engineers. They plan to close the barrier Thursday during the morning hours through the afternoon.
Also, schools in Stamford will be closed on Thursday due to the storm.
To accommodate snow removal, alternate side parking rules will be in effect.
On Thursday, Jan. 4, parking will be allowed on the even-numbered side of some streets and restricted on the odd-numbered side of the street until 8 a.m. Friday, Jan. 5, at which time cars should move to the odd-numbered side. Click here for a list of affected streets.
Those in need of shelter are urged to check with 2-1-1 and the City of Stamford website for the latest information regarding warming center openings. These listings will be updated as warranted.
Inspirica, a Stamford-based provider of services to the homeless, will provide an overnight warming center for those residents in need from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. at 8 Woodland Place, Stamford.
